From New Skills to New Friendships: How We Build Capacity Together

What is NDIS capacity building? At its core, it’s about discovering and developing your strengths to lead a more independent and fulfilling life. It’s about learning practical skills that build your confidence, and then using those skills to open doors to new experiences and friendships.

At JANGO, our approach to NDIS capacity building is designed to do both. We focus on helping you develop skills first, in a supportive space, before using those skills to build lasting social connections right here on the Gold Coast.

It’s a journey we take together, starting with you and expanding into the community.

Music Programs for NDIS Capacity Building

Music is a powerful tool for self-expression and learning. The journey often starts quietly, with our Support Workers focusing on your individual goals as part of your NDIS capacity-building plan.

This initial stage could involve:

  • Learning the chords of your favourite song on a guitar.
  • Working one-on-one to write your lyrics.
  • Building confidence in your voice through singing exercises.

The first step in our music program is building your skills and confidence.

Once you feel more confident, the next step is sharing your new skills. This is where individual learning turns into social connection. We help you transition into group settings, such as:

  • Joining a small group jam session with other Participants.
  • Collaborating with others to write a song together.
  • Feeling the thrill of performing for a small, supportive audience.

Healthy Habits: A Core Part of Capacity Building

Developing healthy habits is fundamental to living an independent life. Our approach to capacity building in this area begins with expert advice and practical, in-home support.

We start by helping you:

  • Work with a qualified Dietitian to create a personalised healthy eating plan.
  • Prepare healthy meals in your own kitchen with your Support Worker.
  • Partner with an Exercise Physiologist to design a fun and achievable fitness routine.

From dietitian advice to cooking with friends, our healthy habits programs build skills that last a lifetime.

As you build these healthy routines, they become the perfect ingredients for social connection. We then support you in taking the next step, like:

  • Join a group cooking class to share your new skills.
  • Finding a local walking group or joining a gentle fitness class.
  • Connecting with others who share your health goals.

Building Life Skills Through Your NDIS Plan

“Life skills” can cover anything from managing your schedule to navigating the community. These skills are the building blocks of independence. Our programs focus on mastering them in a calm, controlled way first.

This could look like:

  • Creating a visual weekly planner with your Support Coordinator.
  • Learning to navigate public transport routes online.
  • Practising communication skills for making appointments.

Building life skills opens doors to engaging with our community and enjoying unique experiences.

Once you have these core skills, we support you in taking them out into the community. This is where your NDIS capacity-building journey blossoms into social participation. We can assist you in:

  • Joining a local hobby group that you’re passionate about.
  • Catching the G:link with a Support Worker to meet a friend in Broadbeach.
  • Feeling empowered to enjoy unique local experiences, like visiting the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

This is what person-centred support is all about. You can read more about our values in JANGO’s story.
